Overpass on motorway A-31. Albacete, Spain

The improvement of motorway A-31 included the widening to accommodate an additional lane in each direction.

The widening interfered with the overpass existing piers. The solution was to transfer the load on the piers to a new frame structure before demolishing them.

The structure is a combination of steel elements, some of which with internal prestressing, and a counterweight system built behind the existing abutments.
